When I was a kid, I recall staring at the patterns on our curtains, chairs, sofa, and whatever else had some design on it. Like the example above. We had curtains or pillowcases with a pattern similar to the one above.
If I stared long enough, I would see... things. Like the face of a clown, or an insect, or ocean waves. My mind would race and just see things.
More often than not, I'd see a cartoony face staring back at me.
